In the Quill-based WYSIWYG HTML Editor on the homepage, the input is rich text copied from a document, web page or email, and the output is the same words without the unwanted fonts, sizes and colors. The site pages I checked do not name a clear-formatting button, so I describe Quill’s documented behavior and a fallback instead of a specific control label.

Avoid any control that empties the whole document, because that deletes everything instead of cleaning the paste. Below I explain the difference between rich-text and plain-text paste, what Quill can keep, how to compare Source before and after cleanup, and what to check when text still looks styled. You do not need to undo the paste or start over.

Select only the pasted text that has the wrong font, size or color. Drag across it or extend the selection with the keyboard.

Look for a clear-formatting control on the toolbar. The site pages I checked do not document one by name, so I cannot give you a label. If you find one, apply it to the selection only. Avoid any control that empties the whole document.

Look at the visible result. The text should fall back to the editor’s default appearance.

Open Source and read the generated HTML. A matching look is not enough, because the right-hand preview is plain text and cannot show whether styling was removed.

Reapply anything you want to keep, such as a link or bold emphasis, on purpose.

If you cannot find a clear-formatting control, a dependable fallback is to delete the styled words and retype them, or to paste them again as plain text if your browser offers that option. Both avoid carrying the source styling over.

The reason cleanup is possible is that the editor uses Quill 2, which keeps its own model of the content. Quill documents a
removeFormat
API that removes formats from a range of that model, and the Source view reflects the model afterward. The site does not document that its toolbar uses that API, so I treat it as background, not a promise about a specific button.

One limit applies from the start: I cannot promise that every pasted style was kept in the first place. Some source styles never survive the paste, and I cover that below. Also note that this fixes appearance inside the content. It is not sanitizing, and it does not make untrusted content safe to publish.

Rich-Text Paste Versus Plain-Text Paste

When you copy from a page or document, the clipboard can commonly hold more than one representation of the same content, such as an HTML version that carries formatting and a plain-text version with only characters. The Clipboard API documentation on MDN is useful general background on how browsers handle clipboard data, though it does not describe this editor’s paste behavior.

A normal rich-text paste hands the editor the formatted version, and the editor then decides what to keep. A plain-text paste hands over only the characters, so source fonts, colors and sizes never arrive. That is the cleanest way to avoid the problem, but it has a cost: plain text also discards links, bold, italics and list structure you might have wanted.

Approach

What arrives

Trade-off

Rich-text paste, then clear formatting

Whatever Quill understands, then the selected range is cleaned

Needs a selection and a Source check afterward

Plain-text paste, where your browser or system offers it

Characters only

Links, emphasis and list structure are lost

Whether a plain-text paste method exists depends on your browser and operating system. I will not name a shortcut that is guaranteed to work everywhere, and the site does not document a dedicated plain-text-paste button. If you want to paste as plain text, check your browser’s own paste options. Otherwise paste normally and clean the result.

If you often paste from the same source, a practical habit is to paste rich text, clean the whole pasted block, and then rebuild only the emphasis and links you need. That keeps the structure under your control instead of the source document’s. If you are new to this kind of editor, the online WYSIWYG HTML editor guide covers the basics of how visual editing relates to the HTML underneath.

What Quill Keeps, Converts or Drops on Paste

Quill does not copy pasted HTML verbatim. It reads the incoming markup, matches what it understands, and builds its own representation. The relevant point here is that Quill supports font, size, text color and background-color formats. A pasted span with a color can therefore become a Quill color format, so it may survive and show up in the editor. The Quill documentation displayed version 2.0.3 when I checked it on October 25, 2026.

That does not mean every style comes through. Source styles that Quill has no matching format for may be ignored or simplified, and the outcome depends on the exact markup you copied. Two pastes that look alike on the original page can behave differently.

I treat pasted formatting as unknown until I inspect it. These are the signs worth looking for in Source:

Inline
style
attributes, which can carry a color or background color.

Class attributes that look like Quill formatting classes, which may represent a font or size choice.

Nothing at all, which means the style was not kept and any odd look comes from somewhere else.

For background on browser editing, MDN’s contenteditable reference explains how a browser lets users edit content, and the WHATWG HTML Standard describes a plaintext-only editing state. Those describe what a page can ask the browser to do. They do not establish a paste shortcut for any particular site, so I do not rely on them for that.

How to Remove Formatting From Pasted Text in a WYSIWYG HTML Editor and Verify It

A short, reproducible check makes the result visible instead of guessed. Use a tiny styled sample so the HTML is easy to read.

Copy one styled word, such as a red word in a serif font, from any document or page.

Paste it into the editor and note how it looks.

Open Source and read the HTML for that word. Write down any
style
attribute or formatting class you see.

Return to the editor, select the word, and apply a clear-formatting control if your toolbar has one. If it does not, delete the word and retype it.

Open Source again and compare with your notes.

The block below is illustrative only. Your real output may differ in attribute order, class names or wrapper elements, and it is not guaranteed output.

<p><span style="color: rgb(230, 0, 0);">Sample</span></p>

After cleanup, you would hope to see something close to this:

<p>Sample</p>

Judge success by what is absent from Source, not by how the text looks. If the
style
attribute and the formatting classes are gone, the pasted formatting has been removed from the content. If they remain, select a slightly larger range and try again, making sure the selection covers the whole styled run.

Remember that the plain-text preview on the right of the editor is not an HTML inspection. It shows text without styling by design, so it will look clean even when Source still carries color or font formatting. For this check, Source is the evidence and the preview is not.

Select Only the Unwanted Portion and Review Neighboring Lines

Cleaning everything is easy but blunt. If a pasted passage has a heading you like, a link you need and three words in the wrong color, select only those three words. That leaves the intentional formatting elsewhere untouched, which is the safest approach to WYSIWYG paste cleanup.

Two scope details are worth knowing, and both come from Quill’s documentation rather than from a documented behavior of this site’s toolbar. First, Quill documents that using its
removeFormat
API on part of a line can also remove line-level formatting, such as a heading or list style, on that line. Whether a toolbar action in this editor does the same is not documented, so after any cleanup glance at the lines around your selection to confirm headings and lists still look right. If a subheading changed level, the guide on WYSIWYG heading levels out of order explains how to check the structure.

Second, Quill documents that
removeFormat
can remove embeds that fall inside the range. The site does not document that its toolbar applies that API to every content type, so I will not promise what happens to images or other embeds in your selection. Keep embeds out of the range you clean, and check afterward that they are still there.

If the cleaned text needs structure, rebuild it deliberately: reapply the heading, list or link after the cleanup. Edits you make in Source and apply back to the visual editor pass through Quill again, so the editor may normalize your markup. A related case is described in the article on why a Quill code block loses its formatting after a paste into another system.

Still Looks Styled After Cleanup? Check the Destination Page

Sometimes the editor and Source are clean, yet the text still looks colored or oddly fonted once published. In that case pasted inline formatting is probably not the cause. If Source has no
style
attribute and no formatting class on that text, the appearance may come from the destination page’s own CSS, such as a theme rule for paragraphs or links.

To check the markup on its own, copy the exported HTML into the HTML Code Editor and look at it in its sandboxed live preview. That editor has no validator, so it will not tell you the HTML is correct. Its preview also uses its own default styles, not your destination site’s CSS, so a neutral look there only tells you the markup carries no inline styles of its own. It does not prove the destination stylesheet is the cause. To confirm that, inspect the published element with your browser’s developer tools and see which rules apply.

If you prefer to strip formatting by moving into a simpler format, the HTML to Markdown converter turns HTML into Markdown. Markdown has no fonts or colors, so those will not carry across. Review the result for lost structure such as nested lists. My walkthrough on moving from Markdown to Rich Text and back shows how that round trip can serve as a cleanup step.

Finally, keep cleanup separate from security. Clearing fonts and colors does not sanitize content, and it is not a substitute for escaping or sanitizing anything you publish from untrusted sources. Formatting cleanup, syntax checks, security review and visual testing are different jobs, and passing one does not prove the others.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a clear-formatting button, and how is it different from emptying the document?

The site pages I checked do not name a clear-formatting button, so I cannot give you a label. If your toolbar shows one, apply it to the selected text only. Avoid any control that empties the whole document, because that removes all your content, not just the styling.

Will cleaning formatting remove links and bold text too?

It can. Clearing formats from a range may include links and emphasis, so check Source afterward. If you need them, reapply them or select only the unwanted portion.

Is there a plain-text paste button in the editor?

The site does not document a dedicated plain-text-paste button. Some browsers and operating systems offer a plain-text paste method, but I cannot promise a shortcut that works everywhere. Pasting normally and cleaning the result, or retyping the text, is the reliable fallback.

Do all pasted fonts and colors survive in the editor?

No. Quill interprets pasted HTML instead of keeping it verbatim. It supports font, size, text color and background-color formats, so some styles can survive, while other source styles may be dropped or simplified.

Why does the preview look clean while Source still has style attributes?

The right-hand preview is plain text, so it does not show styling at all. It is not proof that formatting was removed. Open Source and look for style attributes or Quill formatting classes.

Can cleaning formatting change headings or lists on the same line?

It might. Quill documents that its removeFormat API, used on part of a line, can remove line-level formatting. The site does not document that its toolbar behaves the same way, so check the surrounding lines and reapply a heading or list style if needed.

The text still looks colored after I cleaned it. What now?

Check Source first. If there is no style attribute or formatting class on that text, the color may come from the destination page’s CSS. Inspect the published element with your browser’s developer tools to see which rules apply.

Next steps

To remove formatting from pasted text in a WYSIWYG HTML editor, select the affected text, use a clear-formatting action if your toolbar has one (or retype the text as a fallback), and verify the change in Source rather than trusting the look of the editor or the plain-text preview. Keep the scope small, review adjacent lines, and rebuild headings, lists and links on purpose. For the bigger picture, read the explainer on what a WYSIWYG editor is and how it works.
